Synopsis Life cannot exist without water which is an wonderful chemical in the earth. Civilization started on the bank of the Sindhu river in our ancient India. Rivers and other water systems are being polluted with the progress of civilization in India and abroad life cannot be sustained in polluted water. So water pollution is our great discussion which has been reflected on this valuable contribution.

This book presents the results obtained during the investigations of the effects of some heavy metal salts (cupric acetate, zinc acetate, mercuric acetate and lead acetate) on the various blood parameters, viz., erythrocyte (RBC) number, hemoglobin (Hb) content, hematocrit value or PCV, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total plasma protein content, and serum vitellogenin content of Magur fish (C/arious batrachus L.). It deals with the changes in blood picture of Magur fish on different days after treatment with different doses of those acetate salts. In case of vitellogenin estimation only, estrogen hormone is treated after metal salts administration. Some parts of the works were presented at the 69th, 70th, 72nd, 75th and 76th sessions of Indian Science Congress, Association and National Symposium on 'Modern trends in environmental biology', and seminar on 'Environment and animal life' arranged in Rahara, Calcutta, 1989.
