Medieval India: Essays in Diplomacy and Culture
Synopsis
This collection of studies is concerned with the way in which diplomacy, system of governance and cultural activities interacted with the desire of the rulers, ruling elite and intellectuals in India during the medieval period. The papers have been divided between two sections in orders to put them into some broader context. The first section contains papers bearing on diplomacy and relations between India and foreign countries since the eleventh century down to the Mughal era till the eighteenth century (AD). The papers included in the second section deal with cultural transfiguration that influenced both life and polity and ultimately paved the way for the rise of composite culture of India. The role performed by the Sufis, thinkers, rulers and individual nobles in the field of culture has been studied in some detail.
