Synopsis The book will be useful for the social scientists, functionaries of rural development, researchers, policymakers and administrators of the developmental programmes to conceive the interventions for accelerating the pace of the development of the rural India. Two thirds of our population is living in rural areas with low access to the modern facilities and basic infrastructure. In order to improve their socio-economic conditions, the Government has intervened in all sectors. The success of these interventions is found to be limited. The basic reason is that the interventions are not based on the realities of the people concerned. As part of a fresh intervention on a limited scale in a limited area, a socio-economic survey has been conducted in Chittoor district in selected villages (30). The survey report has been presented in five chapters i.e., background of the Chittoor district, socio-economic profile of the selected mandals, villages, community needs of the selected villages, possible areas of science and technology interventions.
