Nestled in the Shiwalik ranges in the Himalayan foothills, it opens up to the vast Indo-Gangetic plains, thus sharing the characteristics of both ecosystems, it represents the northernmost boundary for important species Like the Tiger, Asian Elephant, King Cobra and certain species of birds. Spread over an area of 820.24 sq. kilometers, it has the most diverse ranges of wildlife habitats in the country, supporting a rich variety of flora and fauna. These include, over 49 species of mammals, 315 species of birds (belonging to 51 families) and reptiles, including 9 species of lizards and 28 species of snakes. Out of the total range of butterflies found in India, one fifth are found in this Park.
