Synopsis Education is the preparation for life and living to make it meaningful and purposive. Philosophy provides a foundation to determine the objectives of education. The term, philosophy of education, has, no doubt, a popular use. It has a reference to the general aims and objectives and it involves perspectives related to life and living. The question of values of inevitable in this context. Education helps toward judgment of values. Decision making is one of the great goals of philosophy of education. The nature of right decisions has to be related to both education and philosophy. For this purpose the personal self has to be discussed in various contexts. Philosophical foundation has its special significance because of its bearing on other perspectives of education viz. sociological and psychological. There are other related issues including freedom and discipline, democracy in education and its application in classroom teaching etc. Lastly, educational theories have evolved round the modalities of approach to life. Realism, idealism, naturalism, scholasticism and pragmatism have influenced educational theories at different ages, no doubt. They are known as schools of philosophy, with their implications. Thus, philosophy of education is a comprehensive area of knowledge with an interdisciplinary approach.
