Synopsis
The trade of textile and spices which allured the Portuguese, Dutch and British to come to India. The political economic set up of India changed due to interventions of these trading companies. India Textile trade prospered in British period and initially the trade was in bullions. After the advent of weaving machines British developed Manchester and Lancashire as the nodal textile centre competing fevourously with India weavers.
After Government has adopted many measures to improve the conditions of the weavers but in vain. Weavers are the most sufferers and as well as biggest of earner of foreign exchange. Inspite of all these weavers became Bonsai people.
Majority of weavers in Banka and Bhagalpur district of Bihar are under BPL. Due to this they move faraway places such as Mumbai, Surat, Bhilwara, Panipat, Karnal or even to south to earn their livelihood. Handloom and powerlooms are closed due to not availability of electricity and their children are without education.
The condition of weavers in Godda, Sahibganj, Pakur of Jharkhand, and Varanasi, Chandoli, Mau, Azamgarh Districts of Uttar Pradesh are very worse. The condition of Carpet Weavers of Mirzapur, Badohi districts and adjoining areas is not better. The plight of chicken workers at Lucknow has disturbed because of negligence of the government.
This book is to take step to foster the spirit of change so that Bonsai People should grow and real India should make real progress.
