Commercial Floriculture: Global and Indian Dynamics
Synopsis
Floriculture includes cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for sale or for use as raw materials in the cosmetics or perfume industry as well as in the pharmaceutical sector. However, today the emphasis on floriculture is not just in creating exotic species for decorative and commercial purposes but also in improving regular varieties and developing mass-cultivation techniques for increased productivity. India is the world’s fastest growing retail market, the second largest consumer base, having the world’s largest acreage (117,000 hectares) under flower cultivation. India is all set to usher in a new era of floriculture. Flower exports flourished from Rs.18.83 crores in 1993-94 to Rs.305 crores in 2005-06 and Rs.400 crores in 2006-07. The former President, Mr. A P J Abdul Kalam, has called for fixing of an annual target of $1 billion of floriculture exports to be accomplished by the country by 2010. The book is composed of select articles that introduce the reader to the worldwide and Indian commercial floriculture industry. The book provides an insight into the production, trade and consumption patterns of global floriculture. It explores the present trends, prospects and constraints of commercial floriculture in India with respect to production, marketing and exports and the efforts made by the Government in the overall promotion of commercial floriculture.
