Synopsis Earthquake is a major natural disaster. An earthquake is an unexpected and abrupt movement in the earth’s lithosphere that is caused by the interaction of plate movements. Sudden movement of the earth's layer occurs due to geological faults or because of volcanic activities. It is an unexpected devastating event, which causes suffering to human beings, animals and plants. The experiences of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, 2001 Gujarat earthquake, 1999 earthquake in Turkey, 2001 coastal earthquake in Central America, Lopevi volcanic eruption of 2006, 2001 earthquake in Indonesia and the recent earthquake in China are some of the reminders of the devastation caused by earthquakes. The study and understanding of earthquake disaster management has therefore become imperative.
