India’s North-East region has a kind of unique charm about it. It is a land of mystic splendour and rich cultural heritage that have lured millions around the world. Comprising eight Indian states, the region has about 4,500 kilometres of international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, China, and Nepal. A significant part of this region is interspersed with hills. Putting together 35 essays, this book tries to highlight several key aspects of North-East India’s social and cultural life including, among others, its society, its tribal groups, marriage systems, folk tales, educational status, festivals, issues of ethnicity and cultural identity, women and their changing status. The essays are grouped into three thematically organized sections: Society and Religion; Education, Festivals and Environment; and Women.
