Suchitra Sen: A Legend in Her Lifetime

Synopsis Her incandescent beauty glowed on the screen and dazzled a nation. When Suchitra Sen turned her huge almond-shaped eyes towards the camera, the audience held its breath, watching one of the greatest actresses of the Indian screen. The unforgettable pair of Suchitra Sen and Uttam Kumar became the epitome of cinematic romance—creating a sparkling screen magic that Bengali cinema has not seen again. Then at the peak of her career, Suchitra Sen gave it all up, to retreat into her private and very secluded world, rarely appearing in public. This is the fascinating story of an actress who mesmerised with her grace and talent and continues to intrigue by her silent mystery.

  • Narasingha P. Sil Shoma Chatterji's "Roma-yana"

I happen to be an admirer of Roma Sen (or the film actress Suchitra Sen), though I do not let my admiration drown in syrupy panegyric so typical of Indian (especially Bengali) biographers. Almost all accounts (including Chatterji's) on this woman project her persona as a majestic and mysterious icon--all gold, no dross. We have little idea of Roma Sen as a human being with her foibles and forte. We need a credible biography (not a hagiography) of this most deserving film personality of West Bengal. We need to know her odyssey as well as her backstage personality--what we Bengalis call Jibancharit and what we have--"Roma-yana".
