Conservation of Ethnographic Objects

Synopsis

This book on "Conservation of Ethnographic Objects an attempt to make available text book for readers who may have some interest in conservation of cultural heritage especially for the conservation students of all the faculties of the National Museum Institute (A Deemed University) and many others from the various museums, Museology and allied Departments of the country and abroad. Ethnography is a vast subject which covers dance and drama as an intangible heritage. The main emphasis is on the activities, life of the early tribes, life style, their art and crafts, customs, festivals describing the human development from individuals to villages, early cities of countries and continents. Conservations of this vast and varied aspect was really a challenging task which could be dealt by the author here which needed a long working experience. There are not many books on this subject and many more attempts by our young conservators would be a step further in this direction. The ethnographic objects are most difficult to maintain in good condition because of their inherent complex nature as they are food for bio-deter gins to nurture them. Most of the ethnographic objects are made of various raw materials and therefore pose a challenge since they have to deal with the individual pieces by detaching them, treating them individually and reassemble them as one object. Many times treatment needed by one part is different than the others. In this book we can find the various aspects such as source, composition, deterioration, conservation and restoration of objects.
