Dhokra Art of West Bengal

Synopsis

The Present monograph cobtains the available archaeological and literary data on the 'Lost Wax Process' as well as the field survey on the Dhokra artisans of Bikna (dist. Bankura, West Bengal) and Daripur (dist. Burdwan, West Bengal).

In this work an attempt has been made to read the data from all possible angles and to give the Dhokra Art from a distinct place in the world of metal art. It is hard to determine the actual antiquity of this living art tradition in West Bengal and also in the other areas of the subcontinent. Again the 'Madhucchistavidhanam' which is occurred in the ancient Indian literature, corelates how much with the "Lost Wax Hollow Casting" process as followd by these Dhokre artisans, is being examined.

Critically examining the products of all the recent settlements in West Bengal the Dariapur art from and the Bikna art form may obviously be considered as the representatives of Dhokra Art of West Bengal.
