History, Art and Archaeology of Doiyang Dhansiri Valley, Assam

Synopsis

Dr. H. N. Dutta covers diverse aspects of history, art, archaeology and culture of the Doiyang-Dhansiri valley based on a vigorous field study in the region of Assam. It goes in detail into the pre-history and history of the region, coming up with new evidence that shows that a line of rulers of the Varman dynasty, and not the Kamarupa kings, ruled the Valley and the contiguous region of Upper Assam. Citing evidence from, among other sources, epigraphical records, it gives the names of the Varman rulers and pushes back the dates of the written records of the region from AD 400-500 AD to 200-300. It studies its archaeological remains and art, particularly stone art, metallic art, terracotta works, wooden works and ivory products and manuscript painting. The text is supported by numerous plates.
