Cultivation of Aromatic Plants in India
Synopsis
A variety of essential oils yielded by as many aromatic plants are used in large amounts as fragrance and flavour materials and in pharmaceutical and agrichemical industry. Such essential oil bearing plants have been developed into industrial crops. In recent years, India has become one of the leading producing, exporting and user country of essential oils. Sophisticated agrotechnologies are required for the economic production of quality essential oils. A large majority of plants whose oils are in great demand have origin outside India. However, Indian geneticists and breeders have developed international grade varieties of many essential oil crops. The cultivation practices suited to the varieties in different agroclimates have also been developed by the crop scientists. These are being used by the Indian farmers and entrepreneurs now in good measure. CIMAP (this institute) makes available the planting material and know-how for cultivation and post-harvest processing through training programmes and crop-wise bulletins. However, bulletins have not yet been produced on all the important aromatic crops. The present publication fills up this gap. This book contains information on 44 essential oil yielding/aromatic plants in terms of their general features, recommended crop varieties and cultivation practices and chemical properties and uses of essential oils. It will be found useful among the users of essential oil crop agrotechnologies for augmentation of their production.
