Post-Independence India saw a significant development in Indian fiction-writing in English though it was expected that English as a language would leave India too, once the British quit the subcontinent. In the Vintage Book of Indian Writing, Salman Rushdie claimed that India's best writing since Independence may have been done in the language of the departed imperialists. The pre-Independence Indian English fiction had nationalism as the major theme. However post independence Indian fiction is influenced by several other elements like alienation, partition motif, subaltern, women's issues etc. In fact post Independence saw the genre blossoming and blooming with the advent of new writers and their exploration of new writers and their exploration of new arenas of expression. Added to this, are the applications of several genres in making a critical assessment of the Indian English fiction as an influence of Western literary theories.
