This volume, containing 15 papers, presented at a series of interactive talks, organized by Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture, Guwahati, attempts to examine the various aspects of land policy in Assam. Going deep into the history of land policies in the state, it takes stock of forces and interests that shaped them from Ahom period onwards, through colonial times to the present one.

It interrogates the land policies from the gender perspective, studies grants given to religious institutions, scrutinizes the status of tribal areas, and the consequences of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The implications of policies related to forests and wetlands have also been analyzed.
