This book tries to analyse the phenomenon of communalism in the Indian context. Examining the process of communalism from its genesis to its institutionalism in Indian society, it discusses at length the social interaction between Hindus and Muslims.

Focusing on the changing orientation of the state, it deals with the serious shift in the political system of India which led to the alarming increase in the communal violence. Finally, it presents a critical analysis of the Gujarat riots of 2002, with special focus on the causes of polarization and the role of civil society in curbing the growth of ghettoisation.
