This book aims to make an in-depth study of the various tribal customary laws and practices, with special reference to the tribal communities of Kukis, Mizos and Zomis in Northeast India. Explaining their traditional institutional and political structures, it describes in detail their rituals, priesthood, beliefs and socio-religious practices of the past, some of which are still practiced.

Focusing on the various tribal customary laws and practices relevant today, it discusses at length the forms of marriage, bride price, divorce, fines and penalties for various crimes like rape, adultery, murder, theft and impragnancy the laws relating to inheritance and succession, and the norms regulating the tribal society.
