Agricultural is practiced by 120 million farm families who live in 6.5 lakh villages. About 77% of total farming community belonhs to marginal and small farmers, who possess only 30% of total operated area. On the other hand the per capita avaliability of land from time, independence of the country has declined. Out of 328.8 mha of total geographical area, 18% under forest, 13.5% is not available for cultivation. Only 144 mha is available for cultivation which has to sustain the one billion of population.

The post green revolution ear in the Agriculture and allied sector has witnessed a decreasing growth rate, decline in size of land holding, depleting and diminishing retuns have brought down the agricultural growth and the consequent widening the gap between rural and urban incomes has become a major cause of concern.
