Sirpur was the ancient famous capital of Dakshin Kosala which is known for its secular past. Part of a report on Sirpur excavations over the years, the volume deals with the secular structures that were unearthed at Sirpur, with detailed descriptions of the palace complex, prime minister’s house, priests’ houses, residential complexes,, temple shops, hospitals and the market. It also discusses the planning of the capitals and cities on the basis of Vastushastra and role of the topography of the area in planning the township along with water management in Sirpur from sixth century BCE onwards. With illustrations that include drawings of plans and photographs, it views the role of the citizens in construction of various establishments including tanks. It takes up the question regarding causes of collapse of Bhuj in the thirteenth century as well.
