Synopsis Over 2000 species of trees are found in India, of which about 150 are of silvicultural importance. These include teak, sal, sisham, chir pine, deodar, rosewood, sandal wood, eucalyptus, poplars, dipterocarps, khair, babul. This book is a part of several volumes on Indian tress and their silviculture. Only trees of silvicultural, commercial and indigenous importance have been covered. It incorporates the silviculture of leguminous trees belonging to the family leguminosae, which is the second largest family of flowering plants in the world. The silviculture of 34 trees occurring in different parts of India has been described. This includes local names, general description, distribution, locality factors, phenology, silvicultural characters, germination and seedlings, natural regeneration, artificial regeneration, tending, management and silvicultural systems, protection and uses. During the compilation of this book a vast volume of published and unpublished literature was consulted and hence no originality is claimed. The literature consulted includes troups' monumental work - silviculture of Indian trees (1921) and its subsequent revision and the author's book on silviculture of Indian trees (1985).
