We must first deal with educational philosophy or the philosophical basis of education. Life is a composite whole, and appears to many to transcend the material elements with which the scientist per se is so deeply concerned. Further, the scientist is in pursuit of isolated facts, and cannot by the very nature of his method get in his science alone the necessary perspective to build his facts into a whole. This is the special function of philosophy. By the philosophy of education we mean the synthesis or correlation of all the knowledge and experience that in any particular may have a bearing upon human welfare in the education of the individual. A large order, to be sure, for the history of education is virtually the history of civilization itself. It is necessary to understand philosophy and philosophy of education in order to improve the educational system.
