The chapters in the volume take up the musical instruments of the North-east region of India by viewing each state separately. Taking into consideration the tribal diversity of the region, they provide a comprehensive account of the numerous musical instruments played in the states of the region on different occasions. They discuss introduction and origin of the instruments in the region, the materials of the instruments, and from where they are obtained or how they are made. They describe when and why are the instruments played, that is, the rituals and other occasions for their use. The detailed account has a number of illustrations on the instruments and shows the way they are played by featuring some artistes at work.
