A Field Guide on Amphibians of Himachal Pradesh

Synopsis

From the introduction: Amphibians are poikilothermal animals that live in both land as well as water. Amphibia is a Greek word amphi=two and bios=life. Frogs, toads, salamander and caecilians are amphibians. They are characterized by two pair of limbs, absence of scales and three-chambered heart. Respiration is by skin, gills, or lungs.

Adult frogs are carnivorous in feeding habit and play a very important role in the food chain of the ecosystem. They are good biological controllers and due to their sensitivity, slight change in the environment is reflected in their population and distribution. It has also been realized that with the augmentation in the knowledge of new species globally, there is decline in the population of amphibians (Alford and Richards, 1999 Licht, 2003 and Stuart et al..2004).

Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Systematic list. 3. Systematic account. 4. Summary. 5. Acknowledgement. References. District-wise distribution of Amphibia from state.
