Synopsis Dealing with problems of state policy, political movements and developmental relations of the two countries--India and Bangladesh, till 1947, part of a broader territorial colonial area, the essays in this volume encapsulate the theme of an integral relationship, which at the same time bears many contradictions. The essays show how these contradictions emerge from political organizations, processes of change and types of cultural activity and how these may have either transformative or stultifying roles in the areas of governance, which have a broader South Asian relevance also. The volume throws light on the process of decolonization of South Asia and also the growth of 'new nationhood' religion, history, ecology and demography provide sites on which the essays build up a critical and comparative examination of South Asian politics and culture, also of the complex of domination and subordination both within the countries and in the subcontinent as a whole.
