A Dictionary of Agricultural Communities of India (Frontiers of Knowledge #10)
Synopsis
The communities that depend on growing different crops and keeping some livestock are called Agricultural Communities. They mainly depend on farming, which is of two types-Subsistance Farmers produce only enough to feed their household, with little or no surplus to sell because the farmers rely on certain old farming methods. On the other hand, commercial farmers aim for a high yield to sell their products for profit. For this purpose they farm animals and crops intensively.
The types and quantities of crops-rice, wheat maize, cotton etc-are determined by soil and climate. Farmers rear animals for meat, milk, eggs, skin and wool. The book attempts to deal with the different communities spread all over India, which are basically related to crop growing and livestock rearing. It also treats how farm production has increased in the 20th century with the introduction of machinery, equipment, chemicals and irrigation leading to the Green Revolution of 1960.
