Synopsis Discovery of coking coal in Sohagpur Coalfield after 1983 had geared up the exploration which still continues. A collaborative project on "Geology of Sohagpur Coalfield and the nature and origin of its coking coal resources" was launched between GSI and USGS during 1996-1998. In this project, detailed studies were carried out on different aspects covering stratigraphy and depositional setting of different units, coal-bearing strata, petrographic and geochemical data of the Barakar and Raniganj coal beds together with stratigraphic and structural data and thermal signatures from coal seams. In this present bulletin all the major findings of the collaborative project has been incorporated.
